![]() ![]() I have participated in one or more CBCs annually since. At the age of 12 I participated in my first Christmas Bird Count in Brockville, Ontario. Martin Parker – As a young person I always had an interest in birds and nature. I atlassed much of the eastern Georgian Bay coast during the second Atlas, and on this third edition I very much look forward to being Kiah Jasper’s youthful deputy coordinator for Bruce (i.e., helping out as needed) and atlasing a bunch of squares in my two Ontario home areas (the Saugeen Bruce Peninsula and the south coast of Manitoulin Island). ![]() ![]() My favourite birding habitat? Give me a coast, any coast. ![]() I still bird non-stop thanks to that sneaky sparrow, so I’ll call it my favourite species, although the actual number of “Jarmo’s favourite bird species” is a running joke in my household. This led to volunteering at the Long Point Bird Observatory as a teen, reintroducing then-extirpated Peregrine Falcons to the wilds of Algonquin Park as a summer job, and eventually to a career as an ecologist. In trying to find the singer, I discovered a whole colourful, musical, and super interesting community of birds in nearby Toronto ravines, and at our cottage near Parry Sound. Jarmo Jalava – Many decades ago, I was lured into birding by a very sneaky Song Sparrow who’d show up in our suburban Toronto backyard every March and tease me with its gorgeous song, always slipping away into the bushes before I could get a fix on him. ![]()
